Early Life and DisplacementMahmoud Darwish was born into a family of landowners in al-Birwa, Palestine, in 1941.
His mother was illiterate, and his education was primarily influenced by his grandfather. After the creation of the State of Israel, Darwish's family was forced to flee to Lebanon, then to Israel-occupied Acre.
